A grand venue
The Orpheum Theatre — recognized internationally as a premier showcase for the arts and entertainment — offers rich ambiance and a historic décor that is unique in the Phoenix area as a multi-purpose cultural facility.
An orchestra lobby in the style of Spanish Baroque Revival mirrors a medieval nobleman’s art gallery, and the mezzanine level draws inspiration from the Italian Davanzati Palace. Within, you’ll find the 1,364-seat Lewis Auditorium, dedicated to Jewell and Delbert Lewis and family. Plaster columns dressed in gold leaf accent the audience chamber. Gaze up at the hand-painted ceiling depicting a bright sunset turning into a starry, night sky.
Full-range sound, theatrical lighting, a communications system and other technologically advanced features support the most complex productions – from concerts and plays to corporate meetings and group celebrations.
Restored to its former glory
The Orpheum Theatre, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has made more than its fair share of history with the many diverse performances it has placed in the spotlight.
Built in 1929 for vaudeville, the Orpheum was the last major construction project in Phoenix before the onset of the Great Depression.
As motion pictures started to dominate the performing arts, the Orpheum earned the nickname, “The Grand Dame of Movies.”
During a 1960s resurgence, Broadway stars and shows of the highest caliber graced its stage.
and following a 12-year, $14 million restoration and renovation, completed in 1997, the Orpheum regained its place as the quintessential Phoenix venue.
